Richard Madsen is Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of California, San Diego. He has written extensively on the sociology of morality, religion and politics, in both the United States and Asia, and is the author, or co-author of numerous books on Chinese culture, American culture, and international relations, among them Democracy’s Dharma: Religious Renaissance and Political Development in Taiwan.
He has also authored or co-authored books and articles on cultural comparison. He is a co-author (with Robert Bellah and others) of both The Good Society and Habits of the Heart: Individualism and Commitment in American Life.
