Peter Clarke is a Reader in Medieval History at the University of Southampton in Southampton, England. He is editor of numerous volumes of medieval history and articles related to the impact of canon law on the medieval church and political society. He is author of The interdict in the thirteenth century: a question of collective guilt (2007), which explored the function and social effects of ecclesiastical sanction imposed on communities for their ruler’s disobedience to ecclesiastical authority. He is the co-editor of Studies in Church History (proceedings of the conferences of the Ecclesiastical History Society) and Treasurer and co-founder of the research network ‘Church, Law and Society in the Middle Ages’ (CLASMA) which aims to provide postgraduate training in medieval canon law and its impact on the church and society.
